I'm a Senior Researcher for Rethink Priorities. RP is a research and implementation group that identifies pressing opportunities to make the world better. It acts upon these opportunities by developing and implementing strategies, projects and solutions to key issues. It does this work in close partnership with foundations and impact-focused non-profits.

Its works covers important and neglected cause areas, including animal welfare, artificial intelligence, climate change, global health and development, and other work to safeguard a flourishing long-term future.

I'm one of the directors of the Animal Welfare Economics Working Group. The working group exists to coordinate and support an international, interdisciplinary network of researchers. The working group promotes this goal by: (a) facilitating connections between economists and those working in relevant fields, such as animal welfare science, philosophy, political science, and policy, by holding an annual in-person conference, running online colloquia, and fostering new collaborations between researchers; (b) developing a research agenda for the field based on the community’s understanding of the highest impact frontiers of research; and (c) providing small grants to individuals and teams to accelerate their work, including funding for doctoral students and postdocs.

I'm the Treasurer for the Insect Welfare Research Society. The IWRS aims to support the global community interested in insect welfare by connecting people, resources, and research. It brings researchers and other stakeholders together, encourage new collaborations that can inform policy and practice, and disseminate evidence-based information on insect welfare.

I'm the President of the Arthropoda Foundation. Arthropoda exists to support the next generation of research on neglected invertebrate species. There are nearly one million described species of arthropods. There may be as many as ten million. We know virtually nothing about these animals and, as a result, know very little about how best to help them. The mission of the Arthropoda Foundation is to support research that can inform advocacy on the most pressing problems facing arthropods. In particular, it prioritizes foundational research that has yet to be explored by traditional funding bodies, thereby increasing its impact for the organisms in Phylum Arthropoda.

I'm a Research Associate at the Butterfly Pavilion. Butterfly Pavilion is the first stand-alone, Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited non-profit invertebrate zoo in the world and a leader in invertebrate knowledge, inspiration and connection. Whether it is providing unique, hands-on learning experiences in our exhibits and educational programs, conducting new research that sets the standard for zoos across the country or building innovative solutions for species and habitat conservation in countries around the world, Butterfly Pavilion is leading the way in ensuring invertebrates are protected for the future.

From 2016 to 2024, I directed the Society for the Study of Ethics and Animals (SSEA), which hosts an online colloquium series and various in-person workshops. It's now led by Avram Hiller.

The SSEA was founded by Harlan B. Miller (Virginia Tech) in 1979. As Miller wrote in 1980: "The Society for the Study of Ethics and Animals has been established to provide for the exchange of information and provide arenas for discussion and debate between those interested in ethical questions concerning human treatment of nonhuman animals. The Society will not take sides, and is committed only to open discussion." You can register for updates from the SSEA here and join the conversation here.
